Lovely Things

31 Jan

Here are just a few things I’m getting excited about this week.

1) Devoo Skin care from etsy.com

I’ve been in a constant battle with my skin lately, it’s acne run amok over here. But I stumbled on this through Etsy and wanted to give it a try. It had so many positive reviews and it’s just one more program, right? It should come soon and I’ll come back and let you know how the progress is going. *Fingers crossed* :)

2) Downton Abbey.

I’m a bit late to the game on this one. Even with my love of victorian England, I couldn’t imagine how this show could be interesting. But man, was I wrong. I think it was the PBS stigma. After sitting through a lot of boring documentaries that were dry as dirt -I just wasn’t willing to commit. But I was impressed. The cast is great, the costume and set design is gorgeous, and who doesn’t love a little scandal? The show is intellectually stimulating because it’s more or less, clean. You’d think it would make it boring but it actually works in its favor. And, I just heard Shirley MacLaine is joining the cast for next season.

3)Umba Box

I was slightly obsessed with this product this week. Its a monthly box of handmade goods delivered to you. The company selects the content at an appropriate price that correlates to the monthly subscription price ($26). In my current financial state, that’s a bit pricey for me but hopefully someday. They just had a Pinterest contest for a free three month subscription. I didn’t win, but it was a great way to see what other pinners thought would be a fun choice.

4) Pinterest. Oh man. Sooo addicting.

5) Cleaning/ organizing. This week we’ve been taking a serious chunk out of our spring cleaning needs. It’s so refreshing and cathartic to tidy up and throw things away. And soothes my organizing OCD ways :)

No Sleep, Big Problem

29 Jan

Any other insomniacs out there? Ah, then you know my pain. Wanting to sleep and not being able to is a terrible thing. Lately I’ve been having a hell of a time with it. But on the bright side, last night I was a doctor in a hospital ER running around, ya know…saving lives. But I was barefoot. For some reason, I couldn’t find any shoes.

So weird.

But the kicker is that I used to love sleep. I might be the only child that actually took myself to bed. I was tired, I went to sleep. It was as easy as that. According to my mom, I looked quite a bit like this:

I think if I knew these days were going to be so few and far between now- I would have enjoyed them more. But then I developed will power in high school and was determined to stay up. And here I am, 8 years later. Still not sleeping.

But I did learn something interesting from my neurologist when I went in for my migraine check. I told him my sleep pattern was off, and that was probably contributing to my headaches. Of course he agreed but he also told me that it’s my age. You know how teenagers are thought to be lazy and sleep til noon? Yeah, well, it’s not their fault. The doc told me that our bodies/brain thrown off our circadian rhythem in our teens and doesn’t correct itself until we’re in our mid-late twenties. That’s a major reason why we tend to be night owls and have odd sleep patterns.

But for now, I think I’m just going to have a hot cup of tea and rest my eyes.

Have any favorite sleep tips?

My 5

25 Jan

The internet is a funny thing. I check it every morning to make sure the world’s still there, read my favorite blogs, drop in for a bit of Facebook and Twitter. I come to my blog to see what’s new and try to think of some new things to say to my wonderful readers :)

But those things aside, isn’t it amazing how connected you can feel to someone you’ve never met? Technology and I have always had a bit of a tumultuous relationship, but for all of it’s faults, I love it and will always come back with open arms.

The 6 Weeks of Bliss Challenge for this week was to share some quirks about myself. I jumped on this because these are the things you really wouldn’t know from the internet.

1) I collect journals. I don’t know whether it’s my general love of books, or my perpetual writer’s block but I find solace in surrounding myself with beautiful books. My goal is to fill an entire journal. It hasn’t happened because try as I might, I just can’t bring myself to sit down a write everyday.

2) I was in a play in middle school and got a boot stuck on my leg. It had to be pried off with a bar!

Certainly didn't look like this- but still!

3) I hate sailing. I was in a summer course while in the Bahamas that lasted a couple of weeks. I kept getting burned, hit with the boom and lost a girl’s shoe while capsizing. It was traumatizing.

4) I’m a travel fiend, but airports make me nervous. I always think I’m late, all the rushing and procedure. But I’m totally fine when I’m on the plane. Weird, right?

5) I love soft lights, so much so that I have Christmas lights up in my room all year.

I would love this

Your turn! Feel free to share some of the quirks that make you so special :)

Kicks and Giggles

20 Jan

Anybody else think January tends to be a bit anticlimactic? After all the rushing and anticipation of the holidays the body just sort of chills out and lets all defenses down. That’s normally great and all, except when your immunities are down and you catch a cold. Bummer, right? Oh well, I am feeling much better and I do think being positive has helped. While on the mend, I’ve been visiting some humor websites that definitely put a smile on my face. Laughing really can change your whole day and isn’t it even better when someone’s laugh is funnier than the joke? My brother has a laugh that could put a hyena to shame. No matter where he is in the house, we all smile when we hear it. Here are a couple sites that can bring on the laughs. Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Pinterest– humor section: A lil’ bit of everything. Something’s sure to strike your fancy.

Keep looking 'til you find it. So funny.

  •  Fyouautocorrect: Because it’s a grammarian’s worst nightmare, but also kinda funny. Only when it happens to someone else, of course.
